Galaxie Young Performers Program

Don’t Miss Future Folk Sensations – Or The Chance To Be One.

Each year the Winnipeg Folk Festival presents the Galaxie Young Performers Program during the Festival weekend showcasing young talent from across Canada, the US and abroad.

The program hosts up to 45 multi-talented youth musicians aged 14-24. Participants spend their first day in sessions with mentors chosen from the Festival’s line-up, crafting and perfecting their songs and the second day performing on stage in front of a Folk Fest audience.

Countless talented artists have graced the Young Performers stage since its beginning in 2000 and many have gone on to perform as part of our Festival line-up and even on our Main Stage.

The Galaxie Rising Star Award

In 2010 Galaxie came on board to support the program and honor a participant with their Rising Star Award. The award sets out to encourage, promote and champion new up-and-coming Canadian artists.

Each year the Galaxie Rising Star Award is presented to a program participant who displays outstanding promise as an up-and-coming artist. In addition to receiving the award, the artist will have the opportunity to showcase throughout the year at Winnipeg Folk Festival events, including a spotlight at our annual Gala Fundraiser, Folk Fest in the City, opening for the Artistic Achievement Award winner.

The Winnipeg Folk Fest is pleased to announce the recipient of the Galaxie Rising Star Award that was presented on Friday, July 11, 2014. Congratulations to Adam Hanney who was awarded a guitar at the culmination of a day of performances at the Shady Grove stage. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Adam Hanney has been making music since he was 16. No stranger to the Winnipeg Folk Fest, Hanney, who was mentored at this year's festival by Annick Bremault and Sacha Daoud from Chic Gamine, has been part of the YPP since 2010. When not performing and writing music, the 20-year-old is recording his first full-length album, which will be out later this year.

Each year we program 70+ artists from around the world – approximately 40% Canadian (with 5-10 from Manitoba), 40% from the US, and the rest from outside North America. We aim to program a very high quality, diverse festival with many genres represented on multiple stages.
