The Winnipeg Folk Festival facilitates a number of education and outreach programs both at the Festival and year round. We host two monthly musical presentations at the Millennium Library, offer musical workshops in The Folk Exchange, and provide hundreds of free tickets for the summer festival to various organizations through our Guest for a Day program.
Our most recent initiative is the Musical Mentors Program.
In 2010/2011, we paired 80 youth with five musical mentors. Together they built some musical instruments by hand, wrote the music and lyrics for a few songs, performed their original songs live at the Park Theatre and had an opportunity to record one of their songs at the CBC Radio recording studio. It was a great year and we look forward to more musical creations next year.

Festival-Style Workshops at the Millennium Library
What do good music and good books have in common? Plenty, not the least of which is the good folks who love them! The Winnipeg Folk Festival is pleased to present In the City “festival style” workshops, all year round. All concerts are free and everyone is welcome!

Free Folk for Families at the Millennium Library
Children love folk music too! There’s no time like the present to get our wee folk in the festival spirit! Local family performers will have little ones singing, dancing, and learning, all while having fun.
Saturday afternoons at 1:30–2:30 p.m., at the Millennium Library. Admission is free.
Folk Music Camp
The Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Camp (formerly the Folk Retreat) is an intensive four-day camp for instruction and exploration of the folk genre. The camp takes place immediately before the Festival and features special guest instructors – performers from the 2013 Festival!
