Greening the Festival
The Winnipeg Folk Festival is known for the respectful way we leave the park exactly as we found it each year. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and minimizing our impact on the environment. Here’s a look at some of our initiatives:
- Our Site Development Project is focused on sustainability and relies on the use of reclaimed building materials wherever possible;
- We provide FREE transit service from Winnipeg, to and from the park;
- Our Food Village vendors use compostable cutlery;
- After years of transporting our reusable places off-site for washing, in 2011 we introduced on-site dish washing facilities;
- All cups in our taverns are compostable;
- Over 5,000 kg of organic waste is composted each year;
- More than 100,000 paper plates are diverted from landfill each year, thanks to our reusable plate program;
- We use Lake Friendly soap;
- Over 400 volunteers are devoted to our recycling and composting initiatives;
- We are committed to local, organic and fair trade (LOFT) food sources – both in our Food Village, and in our back-of-house kitchen that prepares meals for volunteers and performers.
