Volunteer

Volunteering with the Winnipeg Folk Festival is a rewarding experience and a great way to support the Festival!

It’s no secret that the Winnipeg Folk Festival is bursting with pride over its volunteer community. Friendships and great music continue to bring together a community of volunteers dedicated to planning and producing a world-class festival.

A Message for Returning Volunteers

The deadline to register to volunteer at the 2014 Festival and update your profile has passed. While you’re still welcome to register, your placement on a crew is not guaranteed.

A Message for New Volunteers

Volunteering with the Winnipeg Folk Festival is a rewarding experience and a great way to support the Festival!  Once you have applied, you will receive an acknowledgement email from us.  It will give you some instructions that will help us keep in touch with you about your status.  Please note that we receive more applications than we are able to find placements and therefore there is NO GUARANTEE that applying to be a volunteer means you will be a volunteer. We will begin placing new volunteers on crews in March and hope to finalize our crews by the end of April.

To apply to be an Apprentice volunteer (13-17 year olds), please complete an application form

Don’t forget to complete and fax back a permission to apply to apprentice crew form! You can download a copy here.

What Do We Expect?

The minimum time commitment for volunteers is 20 to 24 hours. Generally, these hours are spread out over the course of the five-day summer festival – usually in shifts of four or five hours (though some crews do not follow this pattern). This means that you’ll need to be available from the Wednesday to the Sunday of the event. In addition, all volunteers are expected to attend a crew meeting prior to the Festival. Depending on the crew you are assigned to, there may be training hours in addition to these requirements.

We also have a very limited number of year-round volunteer opportunities with a minimum time commitment of 50 hours.

In addition, we ask the following of all of our volunteers:

  • Smile and have fun!
  • Do your job to the best of your ability.
  • Show up on time for meetings and scheduled shifts ready to work.
  • Wear your crew T-shirt and access pass while you are on shift.
  • Make arrangements for the care of your children while you are on shift.
  • Inform the Winnipeg Folk Festival office of any changes in contact information.

What Do We Offer in Return?

We offer a great benefits package to our volunteers that includes:

  • The opportunity to be part of creating a magical experience for over 80,000 people.
  • A chance to be part of a volunteer community and make new friends.
  • Great work experience.
  • A five-day Winnipeg Folk Fest pass with backstage access.
  • Delicious, complimentary meals backstage during the Festival.
  • A crew T-shirt.
  • Free bus transportation between downtown Winnipeg and the Folk Fest site.
  • Vehicle access to Birds Hill Provincial Park.
  • Access to a private volunteer party on Sunday night.
