Prairie Outdoor Exhibition: Call for Submissions

The festival is looking for visual artists to exhibit work in this beautiful outdoor setting. Experience this unique outdoor gallery and create something that will inspire, engage, challenge and amuse our festival patrons.

~ Display your work! The majority of spaces are open fields, where the work can be freestanding. Work can also be installed in trees, tents, on fences or trailers.
~ Transform a stage venue! Create a stage backdrop or design a sound tower scrim. See below for specs.
~ Engage the public! Propose an interactive project that will engage our audience in the art making process: a workshop, group project…

When submitting proposals please consider safety, ease of installation and removal, lasting impact on the natural environment, and the ability of the work to withstand sun, wind, rain, and curious patrons/children. Artists are responsible for installing and removing work.

Participating artists will receive an artist fee and a pass to the Festival.

Deadline: April 1, 2010

Specs for Stage Art

Stage backdrops:
We use 4′ x 8′ stage flats for the backdrops. They have a wooden frame and are covered in canvas and painted black. They have a wood jack on the back to stabilize them and are screwed down to the stage decks. The smallest stage has 4 flats (16′x8′), or 6 flats (24′x8′) and the largest has 8 flats (32′x8′). The current flats could be altered / painted, or something could be attached to the current flats, or something new with similar dimensions could be constructed.

Mainstage PA towers:
Tower on either side of the stage are 39′ high x 10′ wide x 10′ deep. They have an extra bay at the bottom that makes them 30′ across at the base. The covers are made from 70% scrim fabric to allow good sound flow through. Depending on the size and placement of the artwork, sound issues should be considered.

Daytime Stage PA Scaffold:
For the daytime stages, we have small scaffold bays on either side of the stage. Scaffold dimensions are 5′ high x 7′ wide x 5′ deep

Lock Boxes:
For the daytime stages, we have 2 plywood boxes at each stage, 4’ high x 8’ wide x 4’ deep.

“We are very pleased to partner with the MFA on this initiative,” said Trudy Schroeder, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. “Enhancing the Festival site with additional shade trees through this initiative is one of the ways we will be marking the 35th anniversary of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. The trees we are adding to the site through this program will make a lasting contribution to a more beautiful and more comfortable environment for Festival audience members.”Learn more (PDF).
