White Moth is Xavier Rudd’s fourth studio album, and the one that finally harnesses the spirit of his live shows. Long acknowledged as one of the premiere folk performers of his time, Xavier has awed audiences all over the world with his full-sounding one-man-band approach and his rootsy songs. Charting the multi-instrumentalist’s spiritual journey of the last year, White Moth draws on folk, reggae, rock and world music. It features guest vocals from Aboriginal singers from Australia’s indigenous population, and from whom the didgeridoo virtuoso has drawn endless inspiration. Co-produced by Rudd, the disc was recorded mostly in a studio on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. Some tunes focus on his family, while others—like “Footprint” and “Better People”—express his long-standing environmental concerns.
A major talent and multi-instrumentalist, Xavier plays guitars (including slide), tongue drums, stomp boxes, djembes, harmonica, ankle bells and slide banjo. His songs speak of compassion, humanity, spirituality, the Aboriginal peoples of his native land, and the environment. His album Solace has been certified platinum back home in Australia, and his third record Food in the Belly and a live DVD in 2006, Good Spirit, have been certified gold. Able to recreate the sounds of his records live by playing percussion with his feet, handling guitar and didgeridoo duties and of course singing along, Xavier never fails to wow concertgoers. A folk festival favourite and hugely popular in Canada (to which he has strong ties), Xavier packs in armies of the faithful at his amazing shows.
