Prepare to be rocked—emotionally, that is—by the hugely talented singer/songwriter Catherine MacLellan at this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival.
The Prince Edward Island native’s haunting voice and confessional songs have been known to grip listeners by the heart, and if you haven’t heard of her before, prepare to hear more—she’s recently been signed to True North Records. Now based out of Halifax, her most recent album is Church Bell Blues, a beautifully spare country/folk collaboration with James Phillips. MacLellan says of the album, “I was just finding a way to communicate my sadness and my feelings that I couldn’t necessarily express directly to people. I wrote most of the songs in the winter or the fall, when everything is dying and really quiet. It definitely represents that mood.” Catch Catherine MacLellan at the 2008 Winnipeg Folk Festival for introspective reprieve from the hubbub.
MacLellan’s list of inspiriations includes Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. She’ll be bringing her own inspiration to up-and-coming musicians as a mentor at this year’s Young Performers Program, the Festival’s flagship educational program for musicans aged 14 to 24. This is very exciting news indeed. MacLellan was definitely my favourite discovery of last year and her record couldn’t be beat. I can’t wait to hear her live and find out more about her. Counting down already!
