About The Acorn

Apparently, the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree; at least, not Acorn songwriter Rolf Klausener. The Acorn’s newest CD, Glory Hope Mountain, is a musical biography of Klausener’s mother, from her rough-shod childhood in Honduras to her flight to Montreal. If filial love inspired the album, the Ottawa quintet’s freewheeling talents invigorate it: relentlessly driving percussion, full-bodied choruses, and an appropriate sprinkling of exuberant Honduran garifuna rhythms. It’s a far cry from The Acorn’s sadder, slower earlier discs, and farther still from a sound that originated as a one-man project in Klausener’s bedroom. But Canadian music is richer for its blossoming: Glory Hope Mountain’s buzz landed the band opening spots for Yo La Tengo and the cover of Exclaim!.
