The Doug Edmond Band - January 17, 2009

Live @ The Folk Exchange, 211 Bannatyne Ave

Doors 7pm, Show 8pm
$12 Advance, $15 Door

Songwriter, pianist and vocalist Doug Edmond and his band return to the Folk Exchange stage on January 17 after a sold out show in ‘08.
Doug plays with true emotion and writes intelligent lyrics. During live performances Doug and the band (Mitch Dorge on drums, Rubin Kantorovich on guitar and Alasdair Dunlop on bass) slide easily from extremely personal heartfelt ballads to lively uplifting numbers. Doug draws from an appreciation of a diverse genre of folk, jazz and blues. In addition to his extensive catalog of his own material, friends know him for his recreations of other artis’ songs, notibly Bob Dylan. Expect to see the upcoming CD produced by Mitch Dorge hit the shelves soon.

Tickets can be purchased at the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store (211 Bannatyne Ave, at Arthur ) or by calling 231-1377

Weakerthans

APRIL 17th & 18th, BURTON CUMMINGS THEATRE

THE WEAKERTHANS AND CONSTANTINES – ROLLING TUNDRA REVUE ’09

SECOND SHOW ADDED!

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is pleased to present The Weakerthans for their hometown appearance as part of the Rolling Tundra Revue ‘09 Canadian National Tour. Joining them are Toronto’s Constantines and an array of local talent on each stop.

The tour will seek to build on the work the two bands have done on the road together. This extensive tour will take them from St John’s, Newfoundland across the entire country to Victoria BC then North to end in the city of Whitehorse, Yukon. Over the course of the tour the bands will be performing almost 30 concerts in 21 different cities including Winnipeg. Expanding on the highly successful inaugural Rolling Tundra Revue Tour of 2005 they have included St John’s and Whitehorse to give Canadian audiences this unprecedented occurrence. Rarely do artists of their stature take on a tour of this scope focusing on Canada alone. The two critically acclaimed recording artists have previously joined forces on several concert tours. On the shows each act tries to raise the level of their performance to match or better the others.

Constantines have just released their 4th album, Kensington Heights, in partnership with a new label Arts and Crafts, and are expanding their audiences and continue to refine their artistic version of working man’s Rock’n Roll.

After ten years together the momentum only continues to build and The Weakerthans launch this tour on the heels of their highly successful fourth album Reunion Tour. The 2007 Anti release has garnered critical accolades and enjoyed a fruitful year of awards from the XM Satellitte Radio Award, the WCMA’s as well as the SOCAN Echo prize for song writing. Reunion Tour also made the heralded short list for the 2008 Polaris Prize. With these awards, and their history of craft and dedication The Weakerthans have affirmed their place in the pantheon of Canadian rock bands and songwriters. Their songs and reputation as a band have brought them from the margins to stand with their peers in the Canadian music industry. The Weakerthans are sincerely looking forward to the Rolling Tundra Revue 2009 tour as a continuation of this success.

2008 Winter Wassail Photos & Thanks

Thanks to everyone who supported the 8th annual Winter Wassail!  With over 450 guests in attendance, it was Richard Thompson Wassail performancewonderful to celebrate the holidays with festival friends.  Richard Thompson accepted the Artistic Achievement Award for excellence in folk music and wowed the crowd with his riveting musical performance.

The fundraiser is an important event for the festival as the proceeds of the event assist us in providing outreach activities to our community.  Each year, the Festival provides complimentary tickets to other non-profit organizations on request.  In 2008, we provided over 600 tickets to a varied number of groups including: ABC Canada Literacy Foundation, Children’s House, Ronald McDonald House, Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, St. Amant Centre, Kids Help Phone, and Osteoporosis Canada, to name a few.  In addition, we introduced a special program designed to create an enhance and all-inclusive experience for groups that would otherwise face barriers to attend.  The Guest for a Day program not only provided tickets but also included transportation, a pre-festival visit and performance, meals and tours.  Some of the groups who participated in the inaugural presentation of this program were: Canadian Mental Health Assoc, Global College Lost Boys & Girls of Sudan, Luther Home, R.A.Y. (Resource Assistance for Youth), Community Venture, Spence Neighborhood Association, International Centre, Ka ni Kanichihk Circle of Courage, West Broadway Youth Outreach and Wolseley Family Place.  As well, we offer a barrier free opportunity to participate in our arts training programs – the Young Artists and Performers Programs and the Folk Retreat through bursary support.   The money raised at the Winter Wassail allows us to continue and grow these opportunities to provide everyone with the chance to experience the summer festival and our other events.Winter Wassail

WINNIPEG SONGSTRESS LINDSAY JANE TO PERFORM HOMETOWN SHOW TO WARM YOU UP FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON.At the tender age of 10 Lindsay first stumbled upon her first beer stained radio and smuggled it into her Christian home (where listening to popular music was forbidden). With the smell of beer under her pillow, Berlin’s “Take my Breath Away” literally did that to Lindsay and her love of music and natural talent has now become a full career. It began in 1999 with a first place win in a CKUA Radio songwriting competition. Lindsay went on to release her first CD and performed regularly at the Calgary Center for the Performing Arts.

Lindsay Jane’s most recent CD, Lovers Find Reasons was released on November 6, 2007. The album was co-produced by Jaxon Haldane of the popular Canadian hillbilly roots rockers, the D. Rangers. It features some of Winnipeg’s finest musicians including Tanya Elizabeth (The Duhks), Gilles Fournier on Upright Bass, Chris Carmichael on guitars, Joanna Miller on Drums and a harmonica performance by the late Willie P. Bennett. The album begins with a well crafted stand alone song, “Gasoline Stain,” which reflects the strength of her lyricism and the intimacy of her songwriting. “The First Day After Summer” is a fun, upbeat, jazz/swing song that reveals the eclectic sound of the album. Lindsay Jane is joined in the duet, “I Am No Dancer” by Karri Latimer of the band Nathan.

Lindsay has performed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Trout Forest Folk Festival, South Country Fair, Minnesota Folk Festival, Ottawa Voices of Women, Live From the Rock Festival, The Alberta Scene, CBGB Gallery, NYC and many tours through Canada and the United States. She has also played an official showcases at SXSW Conference in Austin TX (2008 and 2006), Prairie Music Week, as well as showcase for Folk Alliance Canada at OCFF. Most recently Lindsay has been nominated in two categories at this years Canadian Folk Music Awards for Solo Artist of the Year and English Songwriter of the Year.

RICHARD THOMPSON to receive WFF 2008 Artistic Achievement Award

December 4, 2008
7:00 pmto11:00 pm
December 5, 2008
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is pleased to present Richard Thompson with their 2008 Artistic Achievement Award. Iconic British folk-rock interview-richard.jpglegend Richard Thompson will make two appearances for the Folk Festival, accepting his award and performing at the Winter Wassail on Thursday, December 4, and performing a full-length concert at the Garrick Theatre on Friday, December 5.

Internationally renowned as both a songwriter and guitarist, Richard Thompson has had a long and storied career, as a founding member of Fairport Convention, in a duo with then-wife Linda Thompson, and as a solo performer.

His seminal albums include Rumor and Sigh, Shoot Out the Lights (with Linda Thompson), and Liege and Lief (with Fairport Convention), which was named ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’ at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. His songs have been recorded by countless recording artists including Bonnie Raitt, Nanci Griffith, June Tabor, Emmylou Harris, David Byrne and Elvis Costello. Thompson was named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all-time and was the recent recipient of both an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting and the 2006 BBC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Richard Thompson has performed numerous times at the Winnipeg Folk Festival: in 1983, 1992, 1998 and 2006. In light of his longstanding relationship with the Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is thrilled that Richard Thompson is the first recipient outside of North America to receive this award.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival Artistic Achievement Award is presented annually to an artist who has performed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, who has demonstrated musical excellence, and who has contributed at an exceptional level to the field of folk music and to the community as a whole. A work of art by a Manitoba artist is presented to the recipient, along with a cash award of $10,000. The award is presented annually at the Winter Wassail.

The Winter Wassail, held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Thursday, December 4, also features a dinner, a silent auction, and local entertainment in the form of winter-themed music and animation. Call 231-0096 for tickets ($125 each). A tax receipt is issued for a portion of the ticket price. The event is held in support of the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

In addition to his award acceptance at the Winter Wassail, fans will have a chance to see Richard Thompson in concert on Friday, December 5 at the Garrick Centre. Tickets are $35 and are available through the Festival Music Store or through Ticketmaster. Limited prime seating will be available to Wassail ticket holders through the Winnipeg Folk Festival Office.
