JOB OPPORTUNITY: FINANCE ASSISTANT

Job summary
Reporting to the Manager of Finance, the Finance Assistant provides direct assistance with the day-to-day accounting aspects as well as responsibility for the coordination and supervision of aspects of the Winnipeg Folk Festival merchandise. Post-secondary training in business and accounting is preferable.

Term: May – August

Responsibilities

• Handling the accounts payable and accounts receivable
• Obtain quotes from suppliers
• Assist in researching products
• Assist in ordering merchandise items for Festival
• Assist in coordinating logistics and distribution of donated items
• Assist Manager of Finance in communicating with volunteer coordinators
• Organize and inventory donations and Festival Merchandise
• Prepare lists and inventory sheets for distribution
• Assist Manager of Finance with accounting and receipting of donations and other on-going duties
• Problem solve during the event
• Coordinate return of merchandise and donated product
• Attend crew meetings
• Attend Staff meetings
• Write report and make suggestions for improvements

Demonstrated Abilities

• Ability to work calmly and politely under pressure and with a wide variety of colleagues, suppliers, artists, vendors and volunteers.
• Attention to detail
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks
• Creative and resourceful problem solver

Experience Required

• Accounting experience
• Retail experience
• Experience working for a major event or festival desirable

Education and Skills

• Training in financial procedures is desirable.
• Project management training and skills are desirable
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Filemaker and Great Plains

Working Conditions

• WFF Office and Festival Site in Birds Hill Park

Work Schedule

The hours of work are generally 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, a 35-hour week with a one-hour unpaid lunch. During the week before, during and after the Festival there is some evening and weekend work required.

Vehicle Requirement

It is desirable for the Finance Assistant to have access to a personal automobile, and have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Job opportunity: E-marketing and Communications Associate

Job summary
Under the direction of the Marketing & Publicity Manager, the E-marketing and Communications Associate helps maintain and develop the website and e-newsletter activities of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and performs other related communications duties as required.

Term: May - October

Responsibilities

• Update and maintain the Winnipeg Folk Festival website by working with staff, third-party designers, and volunteers
• Create and distribute regular e-newsletters
• Respond to inquiries from website users
• Administer the festival’s social networking pages
• Explore the development of new web tools and emerging technologies
• Ensure the consistency of information and brand delivered across online materials
• Assist with electronic distribution of news releases
• Liaise with media and volunteers
• Perform related duties as required

Demonstrated abilities

The successful candidate:
• Has excellent knowledge of web design and a passion for usability and innovation
• Has extensive knowledge of web programming languages, including HTML and CSS
• Has extensive knowledge of CS3 applications and web applications (experience working with WordPress is an asset)
• Is proficient across platforms (Windows and Mac) and browsers
• Has excellent communication skills
• Has an eye for detail and consistency
• Can create outstanding work while meeting competing deadlines
• Can assist in the continuous development of the festival’s web presence and electronic marketing
• Works well in a team environment

• This is a six-month term position, 35 hours per week. During the festival (July 9-12) longer hours are required
• The term will run from May through October 2009

Young Performers live at The Folk Exchange

A selected group of past participants from our Young Performers Program will take the stage to showcase and celebrate young talent, supported by the Ron Oswald Endowment Fund. Admission is $2.
