Art of Music 3: Artists From The Festival poster

An exhibition of artwork, made by six artists who have showcased their work in the Winnipeg Folk Festival Prairie Outdoor Exhibition and two festival photographers who also make art. Including works by Brook Drabot, Lisa Waldner, Dan Saidman, Erica Lowe, Bill Beso, James Culleton, Chris Pancoe, and Jennie O’Keefe. Curated by James Culleton. This is the third in a series of Art of Music exhibits at the Folk Exchange. The first exhibit, Art of Music, featured drawings, paintings, and photographs inspired by music. The second exhibit, Art of Music 2, featured the work of musicians who make art.

Opening reception is on Thursday, February 4, 7:00–10:00 p.m. with musical guests THE SECONDHANDPANTS

Exhibition runs Thursday, February 4 to Tuesday, March 16. Gallery open during Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00–6:00. Admission is free of charge. At the Folk Exchange, 211 Bannatyne Ave.

On November 27, Ethan Osland, co-host of CKUW radio show Black Mask: The Frequency of Resistance, interviewed legendary musician Billy Bragg and his longtime Manager, Pete Jenner, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s Folk Exchange venue. Billy was in Winnipeg to receive the Winnipeg Folk Festival 2009 Artistic Achievement Award and he performed at the Winter Wassail fundraiser in support of Winnipeg Folk Festival education and outreach programs. After the interview, the floor was open for questions from the audience.

Billy and Pete led the small and intimate audience through a candid conversation about Billy’s politics and his art as a songwriter. Also touched on, were a few projects that Billy is involved in, mainly, the Featured Artist Coalition, which advocates for greater Artist control over their copyrighted material, and the Jail Guitar Doors project, which finds ways to bring musical instruments and education into prisons.

Winnipeg Folk Festival at the Library 2010

What do good music and good books have in common? Plenty, not the least of which is the good folks who love them! In this new initiative, the Winnipeg Folk Festival will bring a bit of the festival to the Millennium Library, year-round. Whether you’re a seasoned attendee or a folkie-in-training, there’ll be something for you.

Folk for Families

Children love folk music too! There’s no time like the present to get our wee folk in
the festival spirit! Local family performers will have little ones singing,
dancing, and learning, all while having fun.

Saturday afternoons at 1:30–2:30 p.m., at the Millennium Library Children’s Services. Admission is free.

Winnipeg Folk Festival in the City Workshop Series

The festival’s famous daytime workshop format, indoors and year-round! Not your typical concert – a great way to see musicians up close and personal. 90-minute sessions.

Saturday afternoons at 1:30 p.m, at the Millennium Library Carol Shields Auditorium. Admission is free.

2008 Winter Wassail Photos & Thanks

Thanks to everyone who supported the 8th annual Winter Wassail!  With over 450 guests in attendance, it was Richard Thompson Wassail performancewonderful to celebrate the holidays with festival friends.  Richard Thompson accepted the Artistic Achievement Award for excellence in folk music and wowed the crowd with his riveting musical performance.

The fundraiser is an important event for the festival as the proceeds of the event assist us in providing outreach activities to our community.  Each year, the Festival provides complimentary tickets to other non-profit organizations on request.  In 2008, we provided over 600 tickets to a varied number of groups including: ABC Canada Literacy Foundation, Children’s House, Ronald McDonald House, Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, St. Amant Centre, Kids Help Phone, and Osteoporosis Canada, to name a few.  In addition, we introduced a special program designed to create an enhance and all-inclusive experience for groups that would otherwise face barriers to attend.  The Guest for a Day program not only provided tickets but also included transportation, a pre-festival visit and performance, meals and tours.  Some of the groups who participated in the inaugural presentation of this program were: Canadian Mental Health Assoc, Global College Lost Boys & Girls of Sudan, Luther Home, R.A.Y. (Resource Assistance for Youth), Community Venture, Spence Neighborhood Association, International Centre, Ka ni Kanichihk Circle of Courage, West Broadway Youth Outreach and Wolseley Family Place.  As well, we offer a barrier free opportunity to participate in our arts training programs – the Young Artists and Performers Programs and the Folk Retreat through bursary support.   The money raised at the Winter Wassail allows us to continue and grow these opportunities to provide everyone with the chance to experience the summer festival and our other events.Winter Wassail

In no particular order, here are 35 things we’re doing to celebrate the 35th annual Winnipeg Folk Festival!

  1. Bigger artistic budget: Best. Festival. Ever!
  2. “Light the Way” campaign: receive a mini-LED lantern as a gift with a minimum $135 donation
  3. New LED screen at Main Stage: the “big screen” will be visible in daylight.
  4. New tent covering Snowberry and Big Bluestem Stages
  5. Enhanced campground installations and activities
  6. New tents for the Festival Hub and at the Folk School
  7. Main Stage Music moves to the Festival Hub. Now you’ll be able to pick up CDs by that evening’s performers at the same place you buy your souvenirs and sundries.
