THE CROOKED BROTHERS

Live at the Folk Exchange Thursday, April 9th

Doors 7pm, Show 8pm

Tickets $10 advance, $12 door

NOTE: NEW SHOW DATE - MOVED FROM APRIL 10TH

An exciting blend of timeless country classic sounds, barnyard blues and stomping scrapyard funk. Death, love, sexuality, loss, and loneliness haunt their music, often in three part harmony. Honest, sad, and playful - The Crooked Brothers will have you falling in love with dying, and dying to fall in love. Crooked Brothers

“A sense of humour and a fascination with the past, dark stories of death sweetened with three-part harmonies, and traditional country instrumentation wed with a kazoo, multicultural rhythms, the blues and just about anything that will rattle - the Crooked Brothers create new and irresistible sounds.”

Listen to a tantalizing sample of the Crooked Brothers at said myspace page: www.myspace.com/crookedbrothers

The Crooked Brothers got their Folk Fest start in the Young Performers Program and have since become one of the city’s most watched up-and-coming bands. Come and see what all the fuss is about! (And for more info about the Young Performers Program, click here.)

2008 Winter Wassail Photos & Thanks

Thanks to everyone who supported the 8th annual Winter Wassail!  With over 450 guests in attendance, it was Richard Thompson Wassail performancewonderful to celebrate the holidays with festival friends.  Richard Thompson accepted the Artistic Achievement Award for excellence in folk music and wowed the crowd with his riveting musical performance.

The fundraiser is an important event for the festival as the proceeds of the event assist us in providing outreach activities to our community.  Each year, the Festival provides complimentary tickets to other non-profit organizations on request.  In 2008, we provided over 600 tickets to a varied number of groups including: ABC Canada Literacy Foundation, Children’s House, Ronald McDonald House, Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, St. Amant Centre, Kids Help Phone, and Osteoporosis Canada, to name a few.  In addition, we introduced a special program designed to create an enhance and all-inclusive experience for groups that would otherwise face barriers to attend.  The Guest for a Day program not only provided tickets but also included transportation, a pre-festival visit and performance, meals and tours.  Some of the groups who participated in the inaugural presentation of this program were: Canadian Mental Health Assoc, Global College Lost Boys & Girls of Sudan, Luther Home, R.A.Y. (Resource Assistance for Youth), Community Venture, Spence Neighborhood Association, International Centre, Ka ni Kanichihk Circle of Courage, West Broadway Youth Outreach and Wolseley Family Place.  As well, we offer a barrier free opportunity to participate in our arts training programs – the Young Artists and Performers Programs and the Folk Retreat through bursary support.   The money raised at the Winter Wassail allows us to continue and grow these opportunities to provide everyone with the chance to experience the summer festival and our other events.Winter Wassail

Leak of the Week: Catherine MacLellan

Prepare to be rocked—emotionally, that is—by the hugely talented singer/songwriter Catherine MacLellan at this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival.

Catherine MacLellan lo-res

The Prince Edward Island native’s haunting voice and confessional songs have been known to grip listeners by the heart, and if you haven’t heard of her before, prepare to hear more—she’s recently been signed to True North Records. Now based out of Halifax, her most recent album is Church Bell Blues, a beautifully spare country/folk collaboration with James Phillips. MacLellan says of the album, “I was just finding a way to communicate my sadness and my feelings that I couldn’t necessarily express directly to people. I wrote most of the songs in the winter or the fall, when everything is dying and really quiet. It definitely represents that mood.” Catch Catherine MacLellan at the 2008 Winnipeg Folk Festival for introspective reprieve from the hubbub.

MacLellan’s list of inspiriations includes Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, and Townes Van Zandt. She’ll be bringing her own inspiration to up-and-coming musicians as a mentor at this year’s Young Performers Program, the Festival’s flagship educational program for musicans aged 14 to 24. Learn about the Young Performers Program here.
