WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2010 LINE-UP
Legends and Locals set to Perform at Scenic Birds Hill Provincial Park

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada – Birds Hill Provincial Park will come alive July 7-11, 2010 when one of Canada’s finest summer music festivals celebrates its 37th year with a stellar line-up that features legends, locals, and some of the best new Canadian folk voices and emerging artists from around the world.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival continues its tradition of showcasing an impressive selection of accomplished artists with the likes of eleven time Grammy nominee John Hiatt and The Combo, Juno nominated Sarah Harmer, and the Academy award winning duo of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, better known as The Swell Season.

Other highlights include The Levon Helm Band fronted by The Band’s former drummer and singer Levon Helm, The Avett Brothers, hot off the heels of their career-defining album I and Love and You, indie-folk darling Andrew Bird, and legendary Country Music Hall of Famer Emmylou Harris who will grace the main stage once again. Australia’s The Cat Empire are back this year, and two-time Grammy award winning, hip-hop pioneers Arrested Development will make their first ever Winnipeg Folk Festival appearance.

This year’s crop of home grown Manitoba talent includes recent Juno nominee Romi Mayes, singer/songwriter Greg Macpherson, The Wailin Jenny’s, Grammy and Juno nominee The Duhks, Del Barber, and Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson. The festival is especially thrilled to welcome back folk legend Oscar Brand, one of the festival’s original performers from the 1974 festival who continues to captivate audiences in his 90th year. Other distinctive Canadian female acts include Montreal’s Ladies of the Canyon, and 2010 Juno nominee The Good Lovelies, known for their clever songs and humorous onstage banter.

“I think we’ve put together a line-up that strikes a great balance between both high profile and up-and-coming artists. We have some incredible music legends this year, but we are equally excited about supporting emerging artists and giving them opportunity to launch and develop their careers” says Artistic Director, Chris Frayer, “our adventurous audience enjoys the sense of discovery these artists bring to the festival.”

Traditional and contemporary blues are well represented with Steve Dawson’s Mississippi Sheiks Tribute Featuring The Sojourners, Geoff Muldaur, Del Rey and Alvin Youngblood Hart who pay tribute to the work of this historic group with heartfelt blues and country picking from the 1930s. The festival also welcomes American blues great Sonny Landreth, known for his amazing slide guitar technique, and Hot Tuna, an offshoot of psych-rock band Jefferson Airplane with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady.

A different kind of blue brings out the night owls – Big Blue at Night, the stage known for introducing new sounds on the fringe of folk will see performances from the likes of DJ Dolores, The Rural Alberta Advantage, The Dodos, and the return of last year’s sleeper hit Oka from Australia.

Festival-goers will also have the chance to discover eclectic musicians from across the pond and beyond. Scotland’s The Peatbog Faeries combine pipes and fiddle with a world-class rhythm section to deliver exciting Celtic fusion, and junkyard instrumentalists Konono N° 1 from the Democratic Republic of Congo mix tradition and technology to create an absolutely hypnotic sound. Additional international artists include 2009 Grammy nominee for Best Traditional World Music Album, India’s lap slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya whose originality has earned him admiration worldwide.

Bringing fun and excitement to the highly interactive family area will be local French chanteurs, Lulu and the TomCat, bluegrass family favourite Aaron Burnett, and the all-star indie folk-for-kids group Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players.

“In our 37th edition, The Winnipeg Folk Festival will once again engage audiences in musical discovery and a celebration of community” says Executive Director, Tamara Kater “the festival’s top-notch programming, unique performance collaborations, and warm atmosphere have established its reputation as a premier cultural destination in Canada and a world class event.”

The 2010 Winnipeg Folk Festival takes place at Birds Provincial Park, Manitoba, Canada, from Wednesday July 7 through Sunday July 11, 2010. Early-bird tickets are on sale now at the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store, 211 Bannatyne Avenue (at Albert) or through Ticketmaster: (204) 780-3333 or 1-888-655-5354, or www.ticketmaster.ca.

2010 Winnipeg Folk Festival Tickets On Sale February 13th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2010 Winnipeg Folk Festival Tickets On Sale February 13th
Festival Introduces Bundled Tickets and Attendance Cap

Winnipeg, Manitoba. February 11, 2010 – It’s a big year for the Winnipeg Folk Festival who will celebrate its 37th anniversary with a number of exciting changes. In 2010 the festival will present a five-day format, opening with a “marquee” act on Wednesday, July 7 and running through Sunday, July 11.

This year, the festival will be introducing an attendance cap for the first time in its 37-year history. “As the festival’s attendance has grown, it has been challenging to know how many people can be accommodated on the site in its current configuration” said Tamara Kater, Winnipeg Folk Festival Executive Director, “While a number of programming and site enhancements are underway to accommodate the increasing attendance, our goal is to preserve the audience experience, so the potential of a sell-out does exist”. The festival will cap its daily attendance at 14,000.

The sale of festival camping will also see some changes this year with camping now bundled together with festival passes into one single ticket. “With an increase in demand for camping in recent years, the ticket restructuring is intended to make the availability of camping more accessible and fair” stated Kater.

Early-bird tickets will go on sale February 13, with the full festival pass encompassing five days. The options for purchase will be:

  • Winnipeg Folk Festival five-day pass
  • Winnipeg Folk Festival five-day pass with camping (festival or quiet)
  • Winnipeg Folk Festival daily pass

Tickets are available at the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store, 211 Bannatyne Avenue from 11am – 6pm Saturday, or through Ticketmaster starting at 10 am on Saturday, February 13. Visit ticketmaster.ca or call (204) 780-3333 or 1-888-655-5354.

Five Days Of Winnipeg Folk Festival!

Expanded Program Planned for 2010

Winnipeg, Manitoba (December 1, 2009) – After a successful 2009 that saw the Winnipeg Folk Festival reach its highest attendance ever, the festival is pleased to announce an expanded five-day format for 2010, taking place at Birds Hill Park from July 7 to 11.

The 2009 program featured Elvis Costello on Wednesday night, thanks to the support of Industry Canada’s Marquee Tourism Events Program, an initiative under Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The response from the community was so overwhelmingly positive that plans are now in motion to kick off the 2010 festival on Wednesday night with another ‘marquee’ act.

Early-bird tickets will go on sale February 14, with the full festival pass encompassing five days. For those who wish to purchase camping passes, these will now be bundled together with festival passes into one single ticket. Pricing will be finalized in early 2010, and the options for purchase will be:

  • Winnipeg Folk Festival five-day pass
  • Winnipeg Folk Festival five-day pass with camping (festival or quiet)
  • Winnipeg Folk Festival daily pass

“The festival is thrilled to be able to maintain the addition of a fifth evening of music in 2010,” says Tamara Kater, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. “With the expanded program in the works, and an increase in demand for camping tickets in recent years, our ticket restructuring was motivated by the desire to make the distribution of camping tickets more fair and more accessible.”

While camping passes will only be sold to the public when bundled with five-day festival passes, volunteers will be able to purchase their camping passes separately through the Winnipeg Folk Festival though details have yet to be announced.

Winnipeg Folk Festival presents

JASON COLLETT, Zeus and Bahamas

THE BONFIRE BALL

April 3, at the West End Cultural Centre

jc_bonfire_admat.jpg

Toronto, Ontario artists Jason Collett, Zeus and Bahamas have announced a North American revue tour featuring all three artists performing together and alone during a night long set of incredible music. The three acts have a long history of collaboration, as intertwined as their musical lineage. Instead of the typical show in which each act plays its own set, Collett, Zeus and Bahamas will all take the stage together, playing songs by all three.

At times you will find Collett strumming softly on the guitar alone; Zeus pounding out their rich pop numbers; or Bahamas melting the rocks in your glass; then find them all back together again in full force. The energy, the creativity, the inherent knowledge each musician brings to the stage, of their fellow musician, will make for a unique and exciting night, each and every night along the tour.

Saturday, April 3, 2010, 8:00 p.m., at West End Cultural Centre
Tickets $17 advance, available at ticketmaster.ca and the Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store, 211 Bannatyne Avenue, Winnipeg.

Billy Bragg interview re: “Music as a catalyst for change” at the Folk Exchange

On November 27, Ethan Osland, co-host of CKUW radio show Black Mask: The Frequency of Resistance, interviewed legendary musician Billy Bragg and his longtime Manager, Pete Jenner, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s Folk Exchange venue. Billy was in Winnipeg to receive the Winnipeg Folk Festival 2009 Artistic Achievement Award and he performed at the Winter Wassail fundraiser in support of Winnipeg Folk Festival education and outreach programs. After the interview, the floor was open for questions from the audience.

Billy and Pete led the small and intimate audience through a candid conversation about Billy’s politics and his art as a songwriter. Also touched on, were a few projects that Billy is involved in, mainly, the Featured Artist Coalition, which advocates for greater Artist control over their copyrighted material, and the Jail Guitar Doors project, which finds ways to bring musical instruments and education into prisons.

Download the audio and see a few photos of this interview on the CKUW website.
