SUMMARY:Bahamas
DESCRIPTION:Afie Jurvanen does not spend too much time in cities these days. For nearly two decades\, Jurvanen was a fixture of the Toronto scene\, both as a valued multi-instrumentalist and producer for friends like Feist\, The Weather Station\, and Kathleen Edwards and as the architect of one of his country’s most celebrated artists\, Bahamas. Jurvanen came of age across Bahamas’ first six albums\, the restlessness of jumpy early hits like Pink Strat and Barchords slowly shifting into the generous domesticity of 2023’s Bootcut. But Jurvanen has long been drawn to open spaces\, to a quieter life. In 2009\, the year of his aforementioned debut\, he began visiting Nova Scotia\, the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next decade\, his trips became more consistent\, then more frequent\, and then longer\, until\, in 2019\, Jurvanen and his family of four finally made the move—nearly 2\,000 kilometers northeast\, to Nova Scotia. They live a lifestyle\, Jurvanen half-jokes\, that is “close to Mennonite.” The kids are homeschooled. No one has an iPad. Text messages can feel like miracles. \n  \nBut in 2022\, Jurvanen went back to a city—namely\, Music City\, or Nashville\, Tenn. During five days at the Sound Emporium\, he worked with some of America’s true country greats\, aces like Vince Gill and Sam Bush\, Russ Pahl and Mickey Raphael. Bootcut\, he reminisces\, was maybe the easiest record he’s ever made\, his songs and visions executed with utter clarity by absolute pros. When Jurvanen came home\, though\, he still had a few tunes and plenty of energy. Could he make more music\, he wondered\, outside of a city? \n  \nDespite his extended résumé\, Jurvanen has never been much of a tech guy or studio hound\, never one for making his own records. In 2021\, however\, producer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Van Tassel had also left Toronto\, moving back to Nova Scotia and building a little studio\, called DreamDate\, in a backyard shed there. It was just small enough to skirt inspections\, just big enough to house everything. Jurvanen had once rented Van Tassel’s space back in Toronto to listen to his Earthtones album on someone else’s speakers\, to decide if it was ready for release. He’d been impressed by the place’s minimalism and tidiness\, by the studio rarity of everything working. So Jurvanen began driving the 20 minutes from his cottage to Van Tassel’s spot via a winding ocean road\, passing his days hanging out with his local friend and recording some songs. There was no real agenda but to work and play. And that’s how two people in a little shed made what may be the most effortlessly magnetic record in the entire Bahamas catalogue\, My Second Last Album. \n  \nVan Tassel and Jurvanen played every sound on My Second Last Album\, from the buzzing acoustics of “Shadows” to the Mellotron ostinato of “Play the Game.” This self-dependence allowed them to do anything they wanted\, to follow musical enthusiasms into any space they favored. Jurvanen wrote “The Bridge” via text with Hiss Golden Messenger’s M.C. Taylor\, and he and Van Tassel turned it into an infectious country-funk tune\, the strutting refrain closing the gap between Little Feat and Canned Heat. “Ready for a New Thing” echoes Joni Mitchell’s famous electric guitar tone\, using it as the core of a buoyant little pop song about growing up\, about being happy with growing older. “Feels So Good” is a modern soul wonder\, its perfect groove framed by bass\, piano\, and finger-snap drums and built with a brilliant amount of negative space. There is charging indie rock\, hazy piano\, and pastoral folk-rock. Again\, My Second Last Album is anything Van Tassel and Jurvanen wanted it to be. \n  \nWhat’s most striking about these 10 songs\, though\, may be Jurvanen’s lyrical candor and open sense of play. He often found himself so motivated by what he and Van Tassel had accomplished during the day that he’d go home and write another song by night\, the pace giving him permission to put down words without second-guessing himself. “Don’t hold back/share your opinion\,” as he belts out as he emerges from the bridge on the funny and real opener\, “Sauna.” His opinions here range from government payouts that could feel like pandemic bribes (again\, “Sauna”) to the anti-rock star practice of waking up early enough to see the dawn and feel the day take shape (“Ready for a New Thing”). Over the tender piano of “Only Inspiration\,” he extols the virtues of living in a house of women and girls\, while he chastises Henry Ford’s vitriol and social media’s endemic bile on “Dearborn.” There is a burgeoning strain of self-determination to it all\, of finding and accepting new ways to live for oneself and for everyone else\, too. As Jurvanen\, the son of immigrants\, sings during the poignant closer\, “We all belong in this country.” In the country\, Jurvanen found his own state of being. \n  \nFor a long time\, Jurvanen didn’t know what to do with My Second Last Album. After cutting a legitimate country record in the city where the genre lives\, was it a too-weird left turn to put out a loose-limbed indie-pop set cut in a shed? He thought about slicing it into singles or splicing it as a bonus onto some sort of future Bahamas compendium\, maybe even shelving it altogether. But then he put the record back on after not hearing it for several months and had the simplest and most profound realization possible: He loved these songs\, the way they sat together\, the story they told about who he was at that moment—a married father content to live in the country alongside the very ocean where he surfs\, a musician who often goes to his buddy’s house to casually make some music. It became My Second Last Album\, one of Bahamas’ truly indispensable works.

SUMMARY:Vieux Farka Touré
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented with Festival du Voyageur \nOften referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara”\, Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké\, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré\, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers\, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens\, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father disapproved due to the pressures he had experienced being a musician. Rather\, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté\, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed. \nVieux was initially a drummer / calabash player at Mali’s Institut National des Arts\, but secretly began playing guitar in 2001. Ali Farka Touré was weakened with cancer when Vieux announced that he was going to record an album. Ali recorded a couple of tracks with him\, and these recordings\, which can be heard on Vieux’s debut CD\, were amongst his final ones. It has been said that the senior Touré played rough mixes of these songs when people visited him in his final days\, at peace with\, and proud of\, his son’s talent as a musician. \nIn 2005\, Eric Herman (still Vieux’s manager today) of Modiba Productions expressed an interest in producing an album for Vieux; this led to Vieux’s self-titled debut album\, released by World Village in 2007. Ali Farka Touré’s work to tackle the problem of malaria is continued as 10% of proceeds are donated to Modiba’s “Fight Malaria” campaign in Niafunké through which over 3000 mosquito nets have been delivered to children and pregnant women in the Timbuktu region of Mali. On this first album\, Vieux pays homage to his father and follows Ali’s musical tradition\, giving new versions of the West African music that is echoed in the American blues. The album features Toumani Diabaté\, as well as his late father. \nOn his second record\, Fondo on Six Degrees (2009)\, Vieux branched out and presented his own sound: while remaining true to the roots of his father’s music he uses elements of rock\, Latin music\, and other African influences. The album received a great deal of critical acclaim from across the globe\, and Vieux was clearly moving out of his father’s shadow. \nBy June 2010\, Vieux was performing at the opening concert for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. That month Vieux also released his first live album\, LIVE. His live performances are highly energized and Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar\, as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile\, both of which captivate audiences from all audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages). \nIn 2011 Vieux released his 3rd studio album\, The Secret\, so named because the listener will hear the secret of the blues with a blend of generations from father to son. It was produced by guitarist Eric Krasno (of the Soulive trio) and features South African-born vocalist Dave Matthews\, Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar and jazz guitarist John Scofield. The title track is the last collaboration between Vieux and his late father. With the heralded release of The Secret\, Vieux Farka Touré has clearly established himself as one of the world’s rare musical talents and guitar virtuosos with a distinct style that always pays homage to the past while looking towards the future. \nVieux released The Tel Aviv Session (Cumbancha) in April 2012\, a collaborative project with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel dubbed ‘The Touré-Raichel Collective’ that has been hailed by fans and critics alike as a masterpiece and one of the best collaborative albums in the history of international music\, drawing comparisons to Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder’s legendary Talking Timbuktu album. \nIn 2013\, Vieux Farka Touré’s beautiful and critically acclaimed album Mon Pays was released as an homage to his homeland. Being that his native Mali had recently been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012\, Mon Pays was devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his native Mali. Translated as ‘My Country\,’ this predominantly acoustic undertaking transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation. Two songs on the project – ‘Future’ and ‘Peace’ feature Sidiki Diabate’s kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational “passing of the torch” as Sidiki’s father\, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieux’s father Ali. Mon Pays has been widely hailed as the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generation’s most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world music’s true rising stars. \nVieux reunited with Idan Raichel in Paris to record\, release and subsequently tour their 2nd collaborative album as The Touré-Raichel Collective in 2014. The result was yet another musical and critical triumph\, titled ‘The Paris Session’ (Cumbancha) revered by many as not just a musical gem for the ages\, but a powerful testimonial to the power of art and fraternity to transcend vast cultural and political divides. In 2015\, Vieux released another unexpected\, genre-bending collaborative album\, this time with New York-based singer Julia Easterlin\, aptly titled ‘Touristes’. The album shot to the top of the iTunes World chart and earned critical acclaim\, including that of John Schaefer (NPR) who called it “brilliant.” On April 7\, 2017\, Vieux released his next album ‘Samba’\, recorded live in front of a small audience at Applehead Studio in Woodstock\, NY. \nWhen the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and all touring ground to a halt\, Vieux stayed focussed on his craft at home. He worked tirelessly in the studio he built at his family’s compound (which he named ‘Studio Ali Farka Toure’ in honor of his late father) to record his debut album for World Circuit Records/BMG\, the prestigious UK-based record label with whom his father recorded and released most of his own work. The resulting album\, ‘Les Racines’ (released June 2022)\, sees Vieux masterfully return to the deep roots of the Desert Blues music that his father introduced to the world and Vieux spent most of his career to date exploring\, experimenting with\, and expanding. 2022 also saw the release of a long-awaited collaborative album between Vieux and Houston-based psych-rock superstars Khruangbin called ‘Ali’ – an album on which the artists join forces to pay homage to Ali Farka Toure by reimagining eight of his songs together. The album was an instant hit around the globe\, immediately getting millions of streams\, enormous critical acclaim and even earning the praise of Sir Elton John who called it “one of the albums of the year – absolutely wonderful music.” With each new project Vieux broadens his horizons\, embraces new challenges and further entrenches his reputation as one of the world’s most talented and innovative musicians. \nAs a passionate champion for the people of Mali and The Sahel\, Vieux founded the charity Amahrec Sahel in 2012. As part of Amahrec Sahel’s mission to support humanitarian reconstruction and culture\, the charity has provided school supplies for children\, supported an orphanage in Bamako and provided musical instruments for young musicians in Mali. Vieux is also the director of The Ali Farka Touré Foundation\, an international organization dedicated to the preservation of Ali’s legacy and the cultural growth of Mali.

SUMMARY:SYML: Solo in North America
DESCRIPTION:SYML is the solo venture of Seattle artist Brian Fennell. Welsh for “simple”—he makes music that taps into the instincts that drive us to places of sanctuary\, whether that be a place or a person. \nFennell’s latest offering\, Nobody Lives Here\, marks his clearest\, crispest writing. Written\, recorded\, and produced by him and his longtime collaborator Brian Eichelberger\, it is fueled by the keen understanding that life is a contradiction\, a fleeting moment. But as we accept the presence of loss\, we can still welcome others into our space with melody\, lyrics\, a slide guitar\, or a cello’s hum. His sense of humanity is his musical compass. As an artist\, Fennell takes license to both gut and be gutted. “If the dark inspires the good\, that’s a good thing to be honest about\,” he says. \nHe released his self-titled debut album in 2019\, which includes the multi-platinum song “Where’s My Love” and the Gold Record fan favorite “Girl.” His 2023 sophomore album\, The Day My Father Died\, described by NPR as “euphoric\,” was recorded at Studio X with renowned producer Phil Ek and features collaborations with Elbow’s Guy Garvey\, Lucius\, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek\, and Charlotte Lawrence. His music has become the soundtrack to countless films and TV shows and was used by Lana Del Rey on the song “Paris\, TX\,” from her Grammy-nominated 2023 album. \nWith over four billion streams\, the multi-platinum artist looks at grief\, loss\, mortality\, and the passing of time directly in the eye\, unwavering and harmonious. \nIn 2024\, SYML launched the imprint\, FIN. Recordings\, a collaboration with his label\, Nettwerk Music Group\, and management Good Harbor Music

SUMMARY:Moontricks
DESCRIPTION:Based in the rustic Kootenay mountains of Western Canada\, Nathan Gurley and Sean Rodman of nationally renowned electro-folk duo Moontricks draw inspiration from the ongoing cycles of the natural world. Both volatile and constant—like nature’s best offerings—the band finds solace and beauty in the fusion of seemingly disparate elements. \nThere’s a kind of technicolor campfire quality to their uniquely hybrid sound: Each track is steeped in tradition and polished with a futuristic sheen\, mixing organic folk\, roots rock\, and old-time blues with modern electronic production. Since its initial release\, the band’s breakout hit “Home” has reached over 10 million streams\, and their original tracks have been licensed for a wide range of television networks\, including Netflix and Fox Sports. \nWith the release of their debut full-length album Currents via Westwood Recordings\, the duo reveals an ever-evolving\, cohesive blend of introspective writing\, soulful\, gritty blues\, boot-stomping basslines\, and intricate electronic arrangements. Vast\, intimate\, and dazzling\, Currents is an album about settling into feeling comfortably lost\, and being okay with not knowing it all. It’s about finding joy and inspiration in the act of seeking.
