Galaxie Young Performers Program Participant Receives Grand Prize
Congratulations to 22 year-old Galaxie Young Performers Program participant Haley Carr for receiving the Galaxie Rising Star Award grand prize – an acoustic guitar provided by Yamaha.
Haley was raised on the music of Lucinda Williams, Neil Young, Tom Waits, and Gillian Welch and has developed an ear for folk, roots, and country sounds. She moved to Winnipeg in 2008 to immerse herself in the folk music scene. She started jamming around summer bonfires with friends and quickly made connections with other musicians. It wasn’t long before she formed a band called Hollerin’ Pines and has since been playing all the most popular local venues and across Canada. Haley is currently working on her first full-length solo album, which she hopes to release later this summer.

Dreaming of a Future in Music?
The Galaxie Young Performers Program is an unforgettable musical experience open to talented young folks, ages 14 to 24. Each year, approximately 30-40 performers are selected by a jury of industry professionals to participate in the program. Believe it or not, these young performers will have the opportunity to work on their music one-on-one with Festival performers! For the 2013 program, Jason Collett, Whitehorse and Oh My Darling mentored 41 participants from Canada and the United States. They gathered together at the serene First Unitarian United Church to work on their music with these world-class musicians, then experienced what it feels like to perform in front of the Winnipeg Folk Festival audience.
